I thought I would post a couple photos from last year. The first is a beautiful, wild rainbow trout of about 21" that I caught on the South Fork of the Snoqualmie River just outside of Seattle, WA. The second a thick native steelhead I caught on the Klickitat River in Washington state also.

Looking forward to another terrific year of fly fishing in 2011.

Yesterday we had an awesome conversation with Cameron of Fishy Kid. Fishy Kid is an organization inspired by two fathers who enjoy the sport of fly fishing and want to do their part in passing along the virtues of the outdoors to children and families in the angling community. Yakima River Clean Up

Northgate Mall Kiosk Temporary Store

Our temporary retail kiosk has been removed at the Northgate Mall in Seattle, WA. In total, we were there from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve. We want to thank the thousands of people who stopped by and introduced themselves. Beach cleanup with Arch Anglers

What do a decomposing boom box, a rusty skillet, and a LOT of beer bottles have in common? All are items we cleaned up from Puget Sound beaches at Picnic Point and Richmond Beach, along with a few unsavory items we won't list on this family-friendly blog. Arch Anglers organized the cleanup, and a few hardy souls showed up last Saturday to partake. Ryan, owner and head guide (and finder of the boom box), fed us coffee and sandwiches, and left with a truck-full of trash and recyclables. We saw sea-run cutts feeding within easy casting distance, so we'll be back to one or both spots soon.

Orca Network

What do orca whales and fishermen have in common? They both enjoy catching salmon. While lots anglers practice catch and release, Orca whales do not. In fact, 80% of their diet consists of chinook salmon. The native chinook population, which has been decimated on the Columbia and Snake River sytems in Washington State, has a direct effect in the decline of the orca population in the Pacific Northwest. Friends of the Cedar River Watershed

A few weeks ago we spent some time on the Cedar River, just outside of Seattle, volunteering with the organization Friends of the Cedar River Watershed. Our goal, to remove as many invasive species of plants that we could. After a few hours of work, and many days later spent plucking thorns, we found out that we removed over 4800 sq. ft. of blackberries. That area will be planted with native plants in the upcoming months. And let's hope a fish was saved.

Friends of the Cedar River Watershed is a terrific organization. Throughout the year they offer opportunities to do various types of volunteer activities. In the upcoming weeks ( October 24, 25, 31 and November 1) they are offering the chance to spend time with naturalists learning about the river and the fish who call the Cedar home.
